On 7 September in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Neris Germanas met with members of a delegation from Gifu Prefecture in Japan. The delegation consisting of almost 20 members is headed by the Governor Hajime Furuta. The guests also took part in the events of Sugihara Week in Kaunas, perpetuating the memory of the famous Japanese diplomat.

The participants of the meeting welcomed the close and mutually beneficial cooperation between Gifu Prefecture and the city of Kaunas. Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister invited the Japanese guests to participate in the events of ‘Kaunas 2022 – European Capital of Culture’.

Germanas thanked Furuta for the efforts of the people from Gifu Prefecture to preserve the memory of Chiune Sugihara in Japan. The Prefecture has submitted an application to UNESCO for the inclusion of Sugihara’s documentary heritage in the Memory of the World Register under UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme.

Sugihara (1901-1986) was the Japanese diplomat, who worked in the Japanese Consulate in Kaunas in 1939-1940. He issued about 6,000 Japanese visas to Jewish refugees. This is the reason why Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Israel, conferred the title of Righteous Among the Nations on Sugihara in 1985. An exposition at the memorial museum in Jaocu, the native town of Sugihara, dedicates a lot of attention to Lithuania.
